Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas Just Emerged From a 5-Week Makeover — Here’s Everything That Changed

Three Royal Caribbean ships went into dry dock at roughly the same time earlier this spring. Harmony of the Seas returned to service in May to considerable excitement. Now the last of the three is back — and Liberty of the Seas has brought some significant changes with her.

The 2007-built Freedom-class vessel completed her five-week stay at the Brest shipyard in France and officially resumed service on May 29, 2026, departing Southampton, England on May 31 for a seven-night roundtrip to Spain and Portugal. She is the final ship in this trio of Royal Amplified refurbishments, and her transformation touches nearly every corner of the vessel.

A New Pool Deck Identity

The most immediately visible change for returning passengers will be topside. Liberty of the Seas now has a fully redesigned Caribbean-inspired pool deck anchored by The Lime & Coconut — the tropical pool bar concept that has become one of Royal Caribbean’s most popular additions across its recently refurbished fleet. The area has been refreshed with vibrant colors, a multi-level bar setup, and private casitas available to rent for guests who want a more exclusive outdoor experience.

The Perfect Storm waterslides and Splashaway Bay waterpark have also been added, bringing the kind of water-focused outdoor entertainment that has become a signature feature of Royal Caribbean’s amplification projects.

What’s In and What’s Out

The refit required some significant trade-offs, with several long-standing venues making way for new concepts. Here is the full picture:

Izumi Teppanyaki has arrived on Deck 4, replacing Sabor Modern Mexican with a hibachi dinner-and-a-show experience that consistently ranks among the most popular specialty dining options across the Royal Caribbean fleet. Guests who love Mexican flavors still have an option — El Loco Fresh, a complimentary poolside spot serving burritos and tacos, has been added to the pool deck.

Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen replaces the previous Giovanni’s Table, bringing the updated Italian dining concept that has been rolling out across other amplified ships.

Starbucks has landed on the Royal Promenade, replacing the Boleros lounge — a full-service standalone location that will make early disembarkation mornings considerably more bearable for coffee-dependent cruisers.

The Royal Escape Room has taken over the space previously occupied by the Connoisseur Club cigar lounge on Deck 5, bringing high-tech puzzle experiences to the ship.

A new photo and shore excursions area has been built in the space formerly home to the On Air lounge, creating a more modernized hub for guest services in that area.

68 New Staterooms

Royal Caribbean used the dry dock to meaningfully expand Liberty’s passenger capacity. Sixty-eight brand new staterooms have been added by repurposing underutilized spaces including the former card room, conference center, and portions of the youth and spa areas. The additions bring the ship’s capacity above its previous listing of 3,798 guests at double occupancy — useful timing heading into a busy summer European season.

Other Updates

The Casino Royale received a layout refresh. The Vitality Spa and Fitness Center was modernized with new equipment and updated treatment rooms. The youth program areas — spaces for kids and teens — were completely redesigned with a new layout. All of these changes fall under the broader Royal Amplified program that Royal Caribbean has been rolling out across its older fleet to extend the commercial life of ships that remain highly popular with guests.

Where Liberty Is Sailing Now

Fresh from dry dock, Liberty of the Seas has kicked off a European summer season sailing roundtrip from Southampton. The current seven-night itinerary visits Vigo in Spain, Lisbon in Portugal, and Bilbao in northern Spain before returning to Southampton on June 7. The ship will continue operating Northern and Western European itineraries through the summer before transitioning to a Caribbean program in the autumn.

For passengers who have sailed Liberty before, the ship they board this summer will feel noticeably different from the one they remember. For those sailing her for the first time, she arrives with the energy of a freshly amplified vessel and one of the strongest venue lineups in the Freedom-class fleet.
