Body of Man Who Vanished During Cruise Ship Port Call in St. Kitts Found on Volcano
The search that began with hope has ended in heartbreak. Wang Zyuan, a 33-year-old Chinese man who vanished while hiking the volcano on the Caribbean island of St. Kitts during a cruise ship port call, has been found dead.
The Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force confirmed the devastating news on June 1, 2026, stating that Wang’s body was located on Mt. Liamuiga by one of the search teams — five days after he was first reported missing on May 27. Authorities are now investigating the exact circumstances of his death.

What Happened
Wang became lost on Mt. Liamuiga on the afternoon of May 27 while the cruise ship he was connected to was docked in Basseterre, St. Kitts. He managed to call emergency services at approximately 2 p.m. local time to report that he had lost his way on the trail, but contact with first responders was quickly lost after that initial call. What happened in the hours and days that followed remains under investigation.
Cruise tracking data shows that Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas was the only vessel docked in Basseterre on May 27, though Royal Caribbean has not publicly confirmed Wang’s connection to the ship.
Whether he was a passenger or a crew member also remains unclear, though photographs of Wang appear to show him wearing a name tag — a detail that has led to speculation he may have been a crew member.
Five Days of Searching
What unfolded over the following days was an extraordinary and exhaustive search operation across one of the Caribbean’s most challenging natural environments. Mt. Liamuiga is a stratovolcano rising to over 3,700 feet, with dense rainforest covering much of its slopes and a trail that local authorities describe as physically demanding even for experienced hikers.
Teams from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force, the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services, the Police Training School, the Forest Unit, the Red Cross, the Ross University K9 Unit, and civilian volunteers worked the mountain daily. Technology was deployed alongside the physical search effort — including attempts to use cell phone pings to pinpoint Wang’s location on the mountainside.
Despite everything that was brought to bear, Wang was not found alive. His body was located on June 1.
In announcing the news, the Police Force expressed profound gratitude to every person involved in the search. “We are profoundly grateful to every person who gave their time and effort to this operation,” the statement read. While the outcome was not what anyone hoped for, the effort means Wang’s family will receive closure and be able to bring him home.
A Pattern That Demands Attention
Tragically, Wang’s death is not an isolated incident. Hiking-related fatalities during cruise ship port calls have become a sobering pattern in recent years.
In October 2025, an 81-year-old guest died on Australia’s Lizard Island after being left behind by her cruise ship following a challenging hike — somehow unnoticed when she failed to return aboard. Earlier in the summer of 2025, a missing cruise guest from Norwegian Bliss was found deceased 1,700 feet below a trail ridge line in Juneau, Alaska. Just weeks later, two cruise guests fell from a separate trail in Juneau — and only one survived.
The consistent thread running through these incidents is the combination of challenging terrain, limited communication in remote environments, and the compressed timeframe that port calls impose on shore excursions. Hikers who underestimate a trail, encounter unexpected conditions, or fall behind the group can find themselves in danger before anyone realizes they are missing.
Mt. Liamuiga is considered one of the more demanding hikes available to cruise passengers in the Caribbean. It is not a casual walk — it is a genuine volcanic mountain with rugged terrain that requires appropriate preparation, fitness, and ideally an experienced guide.
For Wang’s Family
Wang Zyuan was 33 years old. The full circumstances of how he came to be alone on the mountain, how quickly the search was activated, and what ultimately caused his death will be determined through the ongoing investigation by Caribbean authorities.
Our deepest condolences go out to his family, his friends, and all those who loved him.
