On August 5, 2026, aboard Carnival Adventure as the ship returned to Sydney from the South Pacific, a ceremony took place that marked a first in Carnival Cruise Line’s history. Gargiulo was officially appointed Staff Captain — the second-in-command position on a cruise ship — becoming the first woman ever to hold that role across Carnival’s entire global fleet.
Captain Francesco Bencivenga, who oversees Carnival Adventure as her commanding officer, personally welcomed Gargiulo to her new position during the onboard ceremony. The moment, witnessed by crew members from around the world, was described by those present as deeply meaningful — not just for Gargiulo, but for the generations of women in maritime careers who will come after her.
A Career Built One Rank at a Time
Gargiulo’s path to this moment was not a shortcut. She began her Carnival career in 2013 as a Deck Cadet — one of the most entry-level positions in a ship’s nautical hierarchy — and worked her way upward through every intermediate rank over the course of 13 years. She joined Carnival Adventure last year, with the ship’s Australian homeport making this week’s ceremony a particularly fitting occasion for a milestone of this magnitude.
Her journey began even earlier than her Carnival career. At just 14, she made the deliberate decision to enroll in a nautical institute in Italy, choosing a path in maritime education at an age when most of her peers were still figuring out what direction their lives might take. “This promotion is an incredible honor and I’m extremely proud to be the first woman in Carnival Cruise Line history to be a Staff Captain,” Gargiulo said. “Carnival’s career pathways allow men and women wonderful opportunities for a life at sea. What a Staff Captain Actually Does
The Staff Captain role sits directly below the ship’s Captain in the command structure and carries significant responsibility across several critical areas of the vessel’s operation. Gargiulo now oversees marine operations and navigation compliance, safety protocols and emergency preparedness, and crew leadership across Carnival Adventure’s complement of approximately 1,100 crew members. She is, in the formal language of maritime command, the person who runs the ship when the Captain is not on the bridge.
Captain Bencivenga spoke with evident pride about his new second-in-command. “As Staff Captain, Daniela is my second in charge, overseeing marine operations, safety and crew leadership among many other roles,” he said. “I am incredibly proud to witness this vital step forward for gender diversification in the maritime industry, opening doors for future generations of female leaders.”

Carnival Adventure sails year-round from Sydney, operating itineraries across the South Pacific that make it one of Carnival’s most distinctive deployments — geographically, culturally, and operationally distinct from the Caribbean and European routes that define much of the fleet’s schedule. The ship carries more than 2,600 guests and those 1,100 crew members on each sailing, making it a significant vessel by any standard.
