Carnival Spirit & Carnival Sunshine Get New Homeports in Major Shuffle
Carnival Cruise Line has announced a series of deployment updates for the 2027–2028 season, reshuffling two of its ships to better meet rising demand in key markets.
The move will send Carnival Sunshine to Galveston, Texas for the first time, while Carnival Spirit will shift to Tampa, Florida, opening new itineraries for guests sailing from both ports.
Carnival says the change will boost capacity in Galveston, one of the fastest-growing cruise homeports in the country, while expanding longer Caribbean options for travelers sailing from Tampa.
“We’re excited to introduce Carnival Sunshine to Galveston for the first time and bring Carnival Spirit to Tampa,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “This move allows us to serve more guests in Galveston, where we continue to see strong demand, and introduce new, longer Caribbean itineraries for guests sailing from Tampa.”

Carnival Sunshine Heads to Galveston
Beginning November 2027, Carnival Sunshine will replace Carnival Spirit in Galveston. The 3,000-guest ship brings a noticeable capacity boost to the Texas market, where Carnival will continue sailing four ships offering a range of four- to 10-day Caribbean itineraries.
Shorter sailings from Galveston will focus on Mexico, with calls in:
- Cozumel
- Progreso
Longer itineraries will stretch deeper into the Caribbean, visiting ports such as:
- Belize
- Celebration Key
- Half Moon Cay
- Grand Turk
- Amber Cove (Dominican Republic)
- Limón, Costa Rica
- Colón, Panama
- Isla Tropicale (Roatán)
- Grand Cayman
- Montego Bay, Jamaica
Carnival Sunshine will also debut eight new sailings, including a standout 10-day cruise to Cozumel, Isla Tropicale, Montego Bay, and Grand Cayman.
Carnival Spirit Moves to Tampa
With Sunshine taking over in Texas, Carnival Spirit will shift to Tampa, where it will sail six- to eight-night itineraries across the Caribbean.
The ship will visit popular destinations including:
- Belize
- Isla Tropicale
- Grand Cayman
- Ocho Rios, Jamaica
- Cozumel and Progreso, Mexico
Carnival Spirit will also operate six special eight-night Panama Canal sailings, calling on ports such as:
- Limón, Costa Rica
- Grand Cayman
- Colón, Panama
One of the season’s highlights is a 13-day Carnival Journeys cruise departing January 30, 2028, visiting:
- Grand Cayman
- Limón
- Colón
- Aruba
- Curaçao
- Ocho Rios

What This Means for Cruisers
The switch allows Carnival to:
- Boost capacity in Galveston for the first time with Carnival Sunshine
- Expand longer Caribbean options for Tampa-based guests
- Offer a wider range of itineraries across both markets
- Maintain four-ship operations from Galveston throughout the season
For travelers, the updated deployment means more choices, new ports, and expanded opportunities to sail from two of Carnival’s most in-demand homeports.
