Royal Caribbean in Last-Minute Scramble After Diana Ross Cancels Naming Ceremony

With just days to go before Star of the Seas makes her official debut, Royal Caribbean is unexpectedly searching for a new godmother.

The cruise line confirmed that legendary singer Diana Ross will no longer take part in the ship’s August 20 naming ceremony at Port Canaveral.

In a statement, the company expressed disappointment over the change:

“We are disappointed that Diana Ross is unable to join us to be godmother of Star of the Seas,” a Royal Caribbean representative said.

Ross, 81, had been announced in June as the ceremonial figure who would christen the second Icon-class vessel. At the time, she called the honor a perfect continuation of her decades-long career bringing people together through music.

Why the Change?

Royal Caribbean has not disclosed the reason for Ross’s withdrawal. The Motown icon recently wrapped a UK arena tour and is set to begin her “Beautiful Love” U.S. tour on August 16 in Saratoga, California.

While her next scheduled concert isn’t until August 28 in St. Louis, scheduling conflicts, health concerns, or family matters may have played a role — though nothing has been officially confirmed.

Who Will Step In?

With the christening just a week away, speculation is mounting over who might take Ross’s place. The cruise line has yet to reveal any candidates, but godmothers are often high-profile figures such as entertainers, athletes, or philanthropists.

Royal Caribbean has also shown flexibility in the past — the ship’s sister vessel, Icon of the Seas, was christened by soccer legend Lionel Messi, making him its godfather.

There’s even a playful suggestion circulating that Star of the Seas’ “Chief Dog Officer,” Sailor, could inspire the selection of a godparent with ties to animal rescue or welfare.

A Pivotal Moment for Star of the Seas

The naming ceremony — set to take place in the ship’s AquaDome neighborhood — is more than a photo opportunity. Maritime tradition holds that a vessel’s godparent brings good fortune to the ship and all who sail on her.

With Star of the Seas about to welcome guests for the first time, the choice of godmother (or godfather) will be a symbolic and celebrated moment for Royal Caribbean.

Cruise watchers won’t have to wait long for the announcement. Royal Caribbean says the new godparent will be revealed soon, and the event will still move forward on schedule.
