Carnival Alaska Cruises Get Big Itinerary Shake-Up for 2026

Carnival Cruise Line has officially made a major change to its 2026 Alaska itineraries, removing Tracy Arm Fjord from all sailings due to safety concerns.

The decision comes after ongoing geological instability in the region, following a massive landslide and tsunami that occurred on August 10, 2025.

Why Carnival Is Skipping Tracy Arm Fjord

In a letter sent to booked guests on March 23, 2026, Carnival confirmed that conditions in Tracy Arm Fjord are currently too dangerous for cruise ships.

“We have been closely monitoring geological conditions in Tracy Arm Fjord. The waterways in the area are currently not suitable for cruise ship navigation,” the cruise line stated.

The aftermath of the 2025 landslide—near the South Sawyer Glacier—has left the fjord with unstable ice, shifting terrain, and an increased risk of further landslides.

As glaciers continue to retreat and the landscape changes, experts believe the risk of another major event remains elevated, making it unsafe for large vessels to operate in the narrow waterway.

Carnival is also not alone in making this call. Holland America Line previously announced it would also skip Tracy Arm for the 2026 season.

Endicott Arm Will Replace Tracy Arm

Instead of Tracy Arm, Carnival ships will now sail through Endicott Arm Fjord—a nearby and safer alternative.

Both fjords share the same entrance at Holkham Bay, about 50 miles south of Juneau, but Endicott Arm is wider and less prone to dangerous ice conditions.

Carnival described the change simply:

“Essentially, we will be turning right, instead of left, upon entering the fjords.”

While Tracy Arm is known for the North and South Sawyer Glaciers, Endicott Arm offers its own incredible scenery, including Dawes Glacier—an active glacier famous for its striking blue ice and dramatic calving events.

Which Ships and Sailings Are Impacted

The itinerary change affects all Carnival cruises that were scheduled to visit Tracy Arm during the 2026 Alaska season.

Three ships are impacted:

  • Carnival Spirit: Sailings from April 28 through September 15, 2026
  • Carnival Luminosa: Sailings from April 27 through September 10, 2026
  • Carnival Miracle: Sailings from April 27 through September 17, 2026

These ships will continue operating their Alaska itineraries as planned, with Endicott Arm replacing the Tracy Arm scenic cruising day.

What This Means for Guests

While some travelers may be disappointed to miss Tracy Arm Fjord, Carnival emphasized that Endicott Arm delivers an equally stunning experience.

Guests will still enjoy:

  • Glacier viewing opportunities
  • Scenic cruising through a dramatic fjord
  • Wildlife spotting and photo-worthy landscapes

Excursions tied to the original itinerary will be adjusted accordingly, and updated itineraries are expected to appear on Carnival’s website within 24 hours of the announcement.

Looking Ahead

At this point, it’s unclear when Tracy Arm Fjord will be considered safe again for cruise traffic.

For now, Carnival’s decision highlights how quickly environmental changes can impact even the most popular cruise destinations—and how cruise lines are adapting to prioritize safety.

There is still hope that conditions will stabilize in time for future Alaska seasons, potentially allowing ships to return to Tracy Arm in 2027 or beyond.
