Medical Examiner Names Victim in Carnival Firenze Balcony Death as 24-Year-Old Woman
The young woman who died in the early hours of April 27 aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship sailing near Catalina Island has been identified — and the details of her story are heartbreaking.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner officially named the victim on April 30 as Briana Miller, 24 years old. She had been aboard the Carnival Firenze, a roughly 1,000-foot vessel operating a five-day Baja Mexico roundtrip from Long Beach, California, with scheduled stops at Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico.
No cause of death has been officially released. The FBI confirmed to media on May 1 that its investigation into the circumstances of her death remains active and ongoing.

What Happened
In the early morning hours of Monday, April 27, Briana Miller went over the balcony railing of her stateroom aboard the Carnival Firenze and fell to a deck below. Her family, who were traveling with her on the sailing, discovered what had happened and immediately alerted the ship’s crew.
Law enforcement boarded the vessel when it arrived at Catalina Island later that morning. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the matter was referred to the FBI, which took jurisdiction given that the incident occurred in coastal waters. Federal agents have been leading the investigation since.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the incident and said its dedicated Care Team has been in contact with Miller’s family throughout. The family disembarked and returned home in the days following the incident. In a statement, Carnival extended its condolences: “Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one.”
A Young Life Lost
What makes this story particularly devastating is Briana Miller’s age. At just 24, she was at a stage of life where a family cruise represents exactly the kind of memory that should last a lifetime. The circumstances that led to her fall have not been confirmed, and with the FBI investigation still underway, official conclusions remain some way off.
The Carnival Firenze completed her sailing itinerary, visiting Ensenada before returning to Long Beach. The ship is now continuing her regular schedule of short roundtrip cruises from California.
Part of a Troubling Pattern at Sea
Miller’s death comes during what has been an extraordinarily difficult stretch for the cruise industry. Within the same week, a crew member aboard Norwegian Breakaway went overboard off the coast of Cape Cod on April 25 — a search was launched but ultimately called off without recovery. Separately, in mid-April, an elderly passenger reportedly jumped from a cruise ship off the Australian coast, with authorities later suspending the search for that individual as well.
The deaths are unrelated in their circumstances, but their proximity in time has cast a sobering shadow over an industry heading into its busiest summer season.
Investigation Continues
As of May 1, the FBI’s Los Angeles field office has confirmed the investigation into Briana Miller’s death is continuing. No charges have been filed and no official cause of death has been established. The Medical Examiner’s office has not released further details beyond the identification.
For a family already navigating unimaginable grief, the wait for answers continues.
Our deepest condolences go out to Briana Miller’s family and everyone who loved her.
