Carnival Responds After Passenger Uses Fork to Scratch Foot at Dining Table

A video posted to TikTok this week showing a woman scratching her bare foot with a fork while sitting at a dining table on a Carnival cruise ship has become one of the most watched cruise clips of the year — racking up over 30 million views as of Thursday morning, and prompting an official response from Carnival Cruise Line that has itself gone viral.

What the Video Shows

The saga began when a fellow passenger, TikTok user @luckycharmedcourt, noticed something at the dining table that she could not let pass undocumented.

In the first clip, a woman in a maroon long-sleeve shirt is seen using her hand to scratch her bare foot at the table, with a white, flaky substance visible on the skin. Flakes can be seen falling to the floor. When she finishes scratching, she reaches back up to the table and continues eating.

That alone was enough to send social media into orbit. But then came Part 2.

The second video — which accumulated 6.7 million views on TikTok on its own — shows the same woman picking up a fork and using it to continue scratching the same foot. A fellow diner can be heard in the background: “Y’all see that nasty mess too?”

The original poster captioned the video “Foot fungus lady on Carnival Cruise using FORKS” and tagged Carnival directly on social media.

The clips did not stop there. In subsequent videos, @luckycharmedcourt documented herself taking the issue to guest services to formally report what she had witnessed, and eventually escalating the matter to the ship’s captain. The full series of videos became a multi-part saga that kept viewers hooked through each new development.

Carnival’s Response

Carnival Cruise Line addressed the situation publicly on its official Instagram account on Wednesday, July 22, in a post that managed to be simultaneously direct, slightly self-deprecating, and genuinely funny.

“Hi Carnival cruisers,” the post began. “We can confirm that forks are intended for food, not foot care. Once we became aware of the situation, our team quickly addressed it with the guest and removed the utensil from service.”

The statement continued: “While the video may be generating laughs and gasps online, cleanliness and hygiene are no joke to us. Our crew works hard every day to maintain high standards across our feet fleet and to ensure all guests enjoy a safe, clean, and comfortable vacation. See you onboard.”

The strikethrough on “feet” — replaced with “fleet” — was a deliberate joke embedded in an otherwise serious statement about hygiene standards. It landed. The Instagram post accumulated over 30,000 likes and more than 1,000 reposts despite comments being disabled, becoming a minor viral moment in its own right.

The Reaction Online

The internet’s response to the original videos has been exactly what you would expect — a mixture of genuine disgust, dark humor, and a certain grim solidarity among fellow diners who have questioned the hygiene standards of shared public spaces.

“I’m so disgusted omg. That’s too nasty,” wrote one viewer.

“Oh hell no, I thought the first part was bad but then it got worse,” said another.

Others took a more practical approach, announcing they would be bringing their own silverware to restaurants going forward. One commenter reflected philosophically on the experience of eating in shared public spaces, concluding simply that plastic utensils were the only safe option.

The comment that perhaps cut closest to the collective anxiety of every cruise passenger who has ever eaten in a ship’s buffet area was the person who expressed concern about the fork’s post-scratching trajectory: “If y’all ain’t tell security so they can throw that fork away, I hope you end up eating off of it.”

Which Ship Was It?

Carnival did not officially confirm which vessel was involved, but cruise tracking data and reporting from Cruise Hive indicate the incident appears to have taken place aboard Carnival Sunrise. The ship departed Miami on Monday, July 20, on a five-day Caribbean sailing with stops including Nassau in the Bahamas and Carnival’s private Celebration Key destination. The ship is scheduled to return to Miami on Saturday, July 25.

A Statement That Hit Differently

What makes Carnival’s response noteworthy beyond the immediate situation is the tone. Rather than issuing a stiff corporate denial or simply stating that all appropriate measures had been taken, the cruise line met the viral moment with a voice that felt genuinely human — acknowledging the absurdity of what had happened, making a joke about it, and simultaneously reinforcing that the company takes cleanliness seriously.

It’s worth noting that the fork in question was removed from service. Whether the guest faced any additional consequences beyond that conversation has not been confirmed.
