The Cruise Capital of the World just made that title mean something new.
PortMiami reached a milestone on September 14, 2026 that no cruise port in its history had ever reached before — its 10 millionth cruise passenger of the fiscal year. With more than two weeks still remaining before the fiscal year closes on September 30, the final number will be even higher.
The previous record stood at 8,564,225 passengers — itself a record that had only been set one year earlier. The new figure represents nearly 17% growth over that mark — more than four times the 4% increase recorded the year before. Whatever the final tally looks like when the books close at the end of September, PortMiami has already rewritten what is possible for a single cruise port in a single year.
A Day Nobody Knows Exactly
The 10 millionth passenger walked through PortMiami’s terminals on September 14 — but which ship they were on is anyone’s guess. Six vessels were in port that day: Resilient Lady, Norwegian Getaway, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Conquest, MSC Seaside, and Wonder of the Seas. Somewhere among the tens of thousands of people moving through that facility on that morning, one person crossed a threshold that made history without knowing it.
What’s Driving the Numbers
The scale of growth is not accidental. PortMiami has been on an aggressive infrastructure expansion that directly correlates with its ability to handle passenger volumes that would have been logistically impossible just a few years ago.
The most significant addition was MSC’s Terminal AA, which opened in April 2025 and immediately became the largest cruise terminal in the world. The 492,000-square-foot facility can process up to 36,000 passengers in a single day and berth three full-sized ships simultaneously. On its own, Terminal AA added a capacity layer that changed what PortMiami could accommodate on a given day.
The 2025-26 season also brought ten new ships to Miami between October and May — including Norwegian Luna, Virgin Voyages’ Brilliant Lady, Windstar Cruises’ Star Seeker, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth, MSC Grandiosa, and Oceania’s Allura. Each new vessel adds thousands of passenger movements per sailing to the port’s throughput.
Three ships alone — Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, MSC World America, and Carnival Celebration — can collectively accommodate over 16,000 passengers per sailing at double occupancy. On PortMiami’s busiest days, with up to ten ships in port simultaneously, the facility manages over 75,000 passenger movements within a single 12-hour window.
What the People Running the Port Are Saying
Port Director and CEO Jonathan Daniels spoke to the operational achievement behind the milestone. “Reaching 10 million passengers reflects our focus on innovation, efficiency and superior passenger experience, as we continue to modernize PortMiami’s infrastructure and expand our capacity for future growth,” he said.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava framed the milestone in terms of what it means for the broader economy. “Breaking the 10 million passenger threshold is a testament to PortMiami’s unwavering dedication to service, sustainability and economic vitality,” she said. “This extraordinary milestone underscores our port’s role as a global gateway and a driver of job creation, tourism and local business growth.”
The economic context is significant. PortMiami contributes more than $61 billion annually to the local and state economy and supports over 340,000 jobs. A meaningful portion of those cruisers also extend their trip — spending time in Miami Beach, visiting restaurants, staying in hotels before or after their sailing — multiplying the economic ripple effect well beyond the port itself.
PortMiami Is Still Growing
The expansion is not finished. Royal Caribbean’s new Terminal G is currently under construction at PortMiami and expected to open in 2027. Designed specifically to accommodate Icon-class vessels and their successors, Terminal G will add further berth capacity at the precise moment that Royal Caribbean’s largest ships are multiplying fastest — with Icon 5, 6, and 7 all scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030.
The port that hit 10 million passengers in fiscal year 2026 is being built for considerably more than that in the years ahead.
Whatever the final number looks like when September 30 arrives, PortMiami has already answered the only question that matters: is the appetite for cruising still growing?
Emphatically yes. Ten million times over.
