Why Norwegian Encore Is Skipping Cozumel and Heading to Jamaica Instead
Norwegian Cruise Line has made a significant change to the itinerary of its Norwegian Encore ship due to unexpected pier damage in Cozumel, Mexico.
Originally scheduled to visit the popular Caribbean port on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the ship has instead rerouted to Falmouth, Jamaica. This marks a shift for the 169,100-ton ship, which had been scheduled for a day of exploration and relaxation in Cozumel.
According to Norwegian’s official communication to passengers, the decision was made after discovering localized pier damage in Cozumel. The company explained that, while the destination is known for its lively beaches and excursions, the damage to the pier rendered it unsuitable for the Norwegian Encore’s large size, as the ship requires a long pier with sufficient clearance to dock safely.
In place of Cozumel, Norwegian Encore will spend the day in Falmouth, Jamaica, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This gives guests an additional hour to experience the rich culture, history, and vibrant atmosphere of Jamaica. Similar to Cozumel, Falmouth offers opportunities for beach days, excursions, and an immersive Caribbean experience, though with a distinct Jamaican twist, including local cuisine like jerk chicken and reggae music.

Adjustments to the Schedule
The Norwegian Encore’s itinerary will also be adjusted for its upcoming stop in George Town, Grand Cayman. The vessel will arrive two hours earlier than originally planned due to the proximity of Falmouth to Grand Cayman.
Guests will now dock at 8 a.m. on Thursday, December 18, with the departure time remaining unchanged at 6 p.m. This early arrival provides passengers with extra time to explore the beautiful island of Grand Cayman.
The rest of the Norwegian Encore’s itinerary remains unaffected, with the ship continuing its seven-night Western Caribbean cruise.
Norwegian has assured guests that all shore excursions booked through the cruise line for Cozumel will be fully refunded and credited to their onboard accounts. Those interested in shore excursions in Falmouth can book directly through the ship’s Shore Excursion Desk.
Why Cozumel Was Skipped
Though the exact cause of the pier damage in Cozumel has not been disclosed, it is believed to be related to structural issues either with the pier itself or the docking mechanisms (dolphins and mooring points).
The Norwegian Encore, being one of the largest ships in Norwegian’s fleet, requires special docking arrangements that Cozumel’s pier could no longer accommodate on this occasion.
Despite this setback, other cruise ships, including Icon of the Seas and several Carnival vessels, are continuing to dock in Cozumel as scheduled.
Looking Ahead
Norwegian Cruise Line has emphasized that the decision to bypass Cozumel was made with passenger safety and comfort in mind. The company has not yet confirmed whether future sailings of the Norwegian Encore will be affected by the same pier damage, as the situation in Cozumel is still being assessed.
Guests booked on upcoming Norwegian Encore voyages are encouraged to stay updated on itinerary changes and to contact the cruise line for any additional information regarding future cancellations or adjustments.
While the damage to Cozumel’s pier is unfortunate, Norwegian’s quick response and rerouting to Falmouth allow passengers to still enjoy a memorable Caribbean experience. Whether soaking up the sun in Jamaica or exploring the unique cultures of the region, the Norwegian Encore’s guests will certainly find plenty of ways to make the most of their voyage.
