Passenger Dies After Going Overboard From Balcony on Carnival Liberty Cruise

A passenger aboard the Carnival Liberty has died after an overboard incident during a Bahamas cruise this week.

The incident happened on the evening of May 13, 2026, while the ship was sailing between Celebration Key and Nassau, Bahamas, during a 7-night voyage that departed from New Orleans.

According to Carnival Cruise Line, the male guest went overboard from a balcony attached to his stateroom while the vessel was at sea. Crew members quickly activated emergency procedures and launched a recovery operation.

The cruise line said rescue teams were able to locate and retrieve the passenger from the water, but despite emergency medical efforts onboard, he could not be saved.

Carnival also confirmed that support is being provided to family members traveling with the guest.

Ship Paused Voyage During Emergency Response

Passengers onboard reported that the ship slowed and temporarily stopped while crew members searched the surrounding area. Some guests shared online that flotation devices were deployed shortly after the incident was reported.

Witness accounts described a tense atmosphere onboard as travelers waited for updates from the crew. After the passenger was recovered, the ship eventually continued its scheduled voyage toward Nassau.

Authorities have not publicly released the identity of the guest or additional information surrounding the circumstances of the incident.

Another Recent Tragedy Linked to Celebration Key

The death comes less than a week after another fatal accident near Celebration Key, Carnival’s new private destination in The Bahamas.

In that incident, an elderly female passenger reportedly entered the water after her mobility scooter went off the edge of a pier while a Carnival ship was docked nearby. Emergency responders recovered the guest, but she later died despite lifesaving efforts.

The back-to-back tragedies have sparked conversations among cruisers online about onboard safety and emergency response procedures.

Multiple Balcony Incidents Reported Recently

The Carnival Liberty incident is also one of several recent balcony-related emergencies reported across the cruise industry.

Earlier this spring, separate incidents involving guests going overboard or falling from balconies were reported aboard the Carnival Splendor and Carnival Firenze.

Modern cruise ships feature protective railings and safety barriers throughout balcony areas, and cruise lines repeatedly remind guests not to climb, sit, or lean over railings while at sea.

Overboard emergencies remain extremely challenging due to factors such as darkness, ocean currents, weather conditions, and the difficulty of spotting someone in open water.

Carnival has not announced any itinerary disruptions or policy changes related to the incident.
