Carnival Announces A Bigger Ship Is Coming to New Orleans
Carnival Cruise Line is set to make waves in New Orleans by deploying a larger ship starting in 2027, increasing its capacity and offering even more options for cruising.
The new addition will replace the Carnival Valor with the Carnival Dream, a ship that can accommodate 3,646 guests—about 700 more than the Valor—bringing a boost to the region’s tourism and cruising options.

Bigger Ships, More Options for Travelers
In May 2027, the Carnival Dream will begin sailing from New Orleans, joining the Carnival Liberty, which has been a staple at the port. The Liberty will continue to operate year-round cruises, while the Dream will offer a variety of itineraries, including 4- and 5-day cruises to Mexico, with ports likely including Progresso, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. Both ships will also visit Carnival’s new private island destination, Celebration Key.
Together, the two ships will be able to carry a combined total of 8,300 passengers when fully booked—indicating Carnival’s faith in the growing cruise market in New Orleans. This move will also generate more tourism activity in the area, which Carnival has partnered with for over three decades.
More Space Means More Fun
Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, expressed her excitement about the larger ship and its impact on the region. “More capacity with a larger ship means more tourism activity for Port NOLA and the region,” Duffy said. The port celebrated its 30th anniversary of year-round cruises in 2024, cementing its place as the 7th busiest cruise port in North America.
The Carnival Dream, which has been serving the Gulf Coast from Galveston, Texas, since its debut in 2008, will make its first New Orleans sailing on May 16, 2027. It will depart on a 7-night Bahamas cruise, calling at Nassau, Key West, and Celebration Key before moving on to her year-round homeport in the Big Easy.

What’s Next for Other Ships?
While the Carnival Valor will be replaced by the Carnival Dream, the Valor’s future deployment has not been revealed yet. In the meantime, the Carnival Liberty, which entered service in 2005, will continue sailing 7-day Western Caribbean and Bahamas cruises, also visiting Celebration Key. The Liberty will remain stationed in New Orleans at least through April 2028.
In addition to its regular sailings, the Liberty will offer longer voyages, including an exciting 14-day Panama Canal journey in November 2027, featuring stops in Aruba, Cartagena, and several other Caribbean destinations.
A Continued Partnership
This move is part of Carnival’s ongoing commitment to New Orleans, where they’ve seen success for over 30 years. With the deployment of the Carnival Dream, more guests will have access to unforgettable cruises from one of the most vibrant cities in the United States.
Stay tuned for further announcements as Carnival continues to roll out its exciting 2027-2028 deployment plans. More options, more capacity, and more fun await passengers in the Big Easy!
