Carnival Just Cut Its Most Beloved Loyalty Perk

Tomorrow, September 1, 2026, Carnival Cruise Line’s long-running VIFP loyalty program officially ends. The new Carnival Rewards program takes over. And one of the most cherished benefits in the entire loyalty ecosystem — complimentary laundry service — is taking a significant hit in the transition.

The change has been generating anxiety across Carnival’s loyal cruiser community for weeks, fueled in part by reports from a cruise social media personality claiming the laundry perk was being cancelled entirely. It isn’t. But what is happening is a meaningful reduction that will hit Diamond-level guests hardest — and John Heald stepped in on Friday to set the record straight.

What Heald Said

Carnival’s brand ambassador took to Facebook on August 28 to address the confusion directly.

“I would like to respectfully correct one of the big cruise influenzers and let you know that from September 1st when Carnival Rewards starts that Diamond and Platinum guests will indeed still have laundry perks and that they have not, as said by Mr Influenzer, ‘been canceled,'” Heald wrote.

The clarification was important — but the full picture it revealed was not entirely reassuring for long-time loyalists.

What Is Actually Changing

Under the current VIFP program, the laundry benefits work as follows:

Platinum guests currently receive:

  • 2 bags on sailings of 2-6 days
  • 3 bags on sailings of 7-13 days
  • 5 bags on sailings of 14+ days

Diamond guests currently receive:

  • Unlimited complimentary wash-and-fold laundry service on every sailing, regardless of length

Starting September 1, under Carnival Rewards, the new structure looks like this:

Platinum guests will receive:

  • 1 bag on sailings of 2-6 days
  • 2 bags on sailings of 7-13 days
  • 4 bags on sailings of 14+ days

Diamond guests will receive:

  • 2 bags on sailings of 2-6 days
  • 3 bags on sailings of 7-13 days
  • 5 bags on sailings of 14+ days

The most striking comparison: Diamond guests under Carnival Rewards will receive exactly the same laundry allocation that Platinum guests received under VIFP. And Platinum guests will receive less than they do now across every sailing length. The unlimited laundry that Diamond members have come to rely on — and that many cite as one of the primary motivators for reaching that status — is gone.

The Opt-In Deadline Is Tomorrow

There is an urgent practical element to this story beyond the laundry changes themselves. Existing VIFP members must actively opt into Carnival Rewards before August 31, 2026 — tomorrow — in order for their current status to carry over into the new program.

Guests who do not opt in by the deadline will not automatically have their VIFP status transferred. Whatever tier a guest holds as of August 31 will become their Carnival Rewards starting tier — but only if they have completed the opt-in process. Heald has been reminding guests of this deadline repeatedly in recent weeks.

The opt-in is completed through Carnival.com under the loyalty program section.

What Else Is Changing Under Carnival Rewards

The laundry reduction is one piece of a much larger overhaul. Carnival Rewards replaces VIFP’s night-based points system with a spend-based model — meaning future status will be earned through onboard spending, cruise fares, and Carnival Mastercard use rather than simply accumulating cruise nights.

The new program has four tiers: Red, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. Whatever VIFP status guests hold on August 31 will carry over and remain valid through December 2028 — the first earning period under the new structure. In January 2029, status will be recalculated based on what guests have earned under the new spend-based system.

Diamond is the only tier that confers permanent status in Carnival Rewards. All other tiers must be requalified every two years. Platinum guests receive an automatic 10,000 stars boost at the start of each new earning period, ensuring they begin as Gold rather than dropping to Red — but maintaining Platinum going forward will require active earning under the new structure.

Why Loyal Cruisers Are Frustrated

The response across Carnival’s loyal cruiser community has been overwhelmingly negative — not just about the laundry perk specifically, but about the cumulative direction of the loyalty program over the past year.

“I am most disappointed at this time with the laundry perk being trimmed significantly,” wrote one Diamond guest on the Carnival Rewards forum. “My husband is Platinum and I’m Diamond and I will of course keep my status but he won’t. I know that might sound silly but I loved going home with no dirty clothes.”

The sentiment is widespread. For many Diamond guests in particular, unlimited laundry was the benefit that made the highest tier feel genuinely different from Platinum — a tangible, practical reward for years of dedicated sailing. Reducing it to the same allocation Platinum guests previously enjoyed strips out that distinction entirely.

The broader frustration is with the trajectory of the program as a whole. Throughout 2026, Carnival has stripped Platinum benefits from multiple sailings, required all existing VIFP members to actively opt into the new program or risk losing their status, changed the fundamental basis on which status is earned from nights to spending, and now reduced the laundry benefit. Each change has its own rationale. The cumulative effect is a loyalty program that feels considerably less generous than it did twelve months ago.

The Bottom Line

The laundry perk is not gone. Heald is correct on that point. But for Diamond guests who sailed specifically to reach unlimited laundry — and for Platinum guests who are now receiving less than they had — the change is real, it is significant, and it starts tomorrow.

If you haven’t opted into Carnival Rewards yet, do it today. August 31 is the deadline.
