Princess Cruises has confirmed the sudden passing of Captain Michele Bartolomei, who died unexpectedly during an active sailing of the Diamond Princess near Taiwan in the early morning hours of May 19, 2025.

The respected captain experienced a medical emergency onboard that sadly proved to be fatal.

Guests reported hearing a medical emergency announcement broadcast throughout the ship around 2:30 a.m. It was later revealed that the emergency involved Captain Bartolomei.

The cruise line issued a formal letter to passengers shortly afterward, expressing sorrow over the loss and extending heartfelt condolences to the captain’s loved ones and shipboard crew.

A Distinguished Maritime Career

Captain Bartolomei had a long and accomplished career at sea. He began working with Princess Cruises in 1995 and brought nearly three decades of leadership to the bridge.

Before joining the cruise industry, he gained experience on private vessels, gas carriers, and cargo ships.

He was particularly known for his time navigating Alaska’s Inside Passage—an area he sailed for 18 seasons and cherished deeply.
