Elderly Cruise Couple Dies After Selfie Attempt Turns Deadly

A port visit to one of Greece’s most picturesque destinations turned tragic on Friday, August 8, when an elderly Vietnamese couple lost their lives at Sarakiniko Beach on Milos.

According to local reports, gale-force winds reaching up to 50 mph swept through the area, creating hazardous conditions along the island’s exposed north shore.

The 64-year-old woman was reportedly attempting to take a selfie when the strong gusts knocked her off balance, causing her to fall into the water. Her 65-year-old husband jumped in to try and save her but was also pulled under by the rough waves.

Rescue efforts were hampered by the dangerous weather, but both bodies were eventually recovered by private boats and a diver. Several vessels in the area assisted in the search. Authorities have not released the couple’s names out of respect for their family’s privacy.

While the cruise line involved has not been officially confirmed, the only ship in port that day was Celestyal Cruises’ Celestyal Journey, which was sailing a 7-night Idyllic Greece itinerary.

The vessel had departed from Piraeus (Athens) and was visiting several Greek islands, along with a stop in Ephesus, Turkey. Milos was the final port before returning to Athens.

Sarakiniko Beach

A Scenic but Risky Location

Sarakiniko Beach is famous for its smooth white volcanic cliffs, striking natural arches, and turquoise waters—a landscape shaped over centuries by powerful winds and waves.

However, the very forces that make it so stunning also make it dangerous during periods of high wind. With no vegetation to block gusts and its location on the island’s north side, the beach is particularly vulnerable to rough seas.

Severe weather at ports of call is not uncommon in cruising. In some regions, high winds can lead to canceled shore excursions, delayed ferry service, or even skipped stops. Even when skies are clear, ocean conditions can pose risks to both ships and guests.

Safety First for Shore Visits

Cruise lines take extensive measures to protect passengers and crew, but unexpected incidents can still occur. Travel experts emphasize the importance of staying aware of local conditions, especially at beaches, cliffs, and other exposed areas.

Simple precautions—like keeping a safe distance from edges, avoiding risky photo opportunities, and knowing one’s swimming limits—can help prevent accidents.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a sobering reminder that even in the most beautiful destinations, nature’s power demands respect.
