Why Carnival Won’t Refund Cruises Impacted by Hurricane Erin
When hurricanes form in the Atlantic, many cruise travelers naturally worry about their upcoming sailings.
But Carnival Cruise Line has made it clear: refunds will only be issued if the cruise itself is canceled by the company—not if guests decide they don’t want to sail because of a storm.

What Carnival Says About Refunds
Brand Ambassador John Heald recently addressed a frustrated guest’s complaint about hurricane disruptions. The guest, in an insult-laden message, asked if Carnival would issue refunds to those who choose not to cruise during Hurricane Erin’s impact.
Heald’s answer was firm but polite: “We will not give a full refund unless your cruise is canceled.”
That means itinerary changes—even those caused by hurricanes—are not grounds for refunds. Carnival, like all major cruise lines, reserves the right to alter ports, adjust routes, or modify schedules at any time for reasons including “adverse weather, hurricanes, [and] tornadoes.” This policy is outlined in the Guest Ticket Contract, section 8(d).
The only exception: if Carnival cancels the sailing entirely, guests will automatically receive a full refund.
Hurricanes and Itinerary Changes
At least nine ships across six different cruise lines have already made adjustments because of Hurricane Erin. For guests who may feel uneasy about sailing during storm season—or who live in storm-affected areas—this policy can be frustrating.
Still, Carnival maintains that the safety of guests and crew comes first. “Trust the Captain, trust the crew, and have all the fun you deserve,” Heald advised.

No Excuse for Rude Behavior
While the hurricane question was fair, the way it was asked was not. The guest insulted Carnival’s call center employees with an offensive slur and even threw in a “Back to the Future” reference.
Heald, who is known for his measured responses, was quick to defend the crew. “My colleagues at the Mother Ship do a fabulous job and will always do their best for you, so calling them —-s was uncalled for,” he wrote.
Carnival’s Guest Ticket Contract also prohibits “obscene, offensive, or outrageous behavior” toward crew members. Violations can result in a guest being removed from the ship—without compensation.
The Bottom Line for Cruisers
If you’re booked on a Carnival sailing during hurricane season, keep in mind:
- No refunds if you decide not to sail.
- Full refunds only if Carnival cancels the cruise.
- Itinerary changes are always possible—and always within the cruise line’s rights.
For travelers, this underscores the importance of reading the fine print and considering travel insurance when booking cruises during storm season
