Carnival Cruise Line Confirms Two Unrelated Guest Deaths at Celebration Key in One Day
A day meant for relaxation and fun turned tragic at Carnival Cruise Line’s new private destination, Celebration Key, when two American cruise passengers drowned in separate incidents on Friday.
Two Fatalities in a Single Day
According to Bahamian authorities, the first incident occurred around 1 p.m. local time when a 79-year-old man drowned while snorkeling near the destination’s beach. Local outlet Our News Bahamas first reported the tragedy on social media, noting that police had launched an active investigation.
Later that afternoon, a 74-year-old woman died while swimming in a pool at the same location. Both cases remain under investigation by Bahamian officials.

Carnival Confirms Incidents
In a statement provided to Cruise Radio, a Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson confirmed the two emergencies, noting the efforts of the line’s lifeguards and medical personnel:
“Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate water emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away.”
The cruise line also shared that one passenger had been sailing with family aboard Carnival Mardi Gras, while the other was traveling with family on Carnival Elation. Carnival’s Care Team is assisting both families.
At the time, only two ships were docked at Celebration Key — Mardi Gras on a seven-night Eastern Caribbean sailing from Port Canaveral and Elation on a Bahamas cruise from Jacksonville.
Celebration Key’s Role in the Carnival Fleet
Celebration Key, which officially opened July 19 with Carnival Vista as its first visitor, represents a $600 million investment by Carnival Cruise Line. The destination spans a one-mile beach, includes a massive 350-million-gallon freshwater lagoon, and features local dining, bars, and a waterpark.
Over the next year, at least 18 Carnival ships are expected to call at Celebration Key, with 20 scheduled in 2026. The port was designed to host up to one ship per day, accommodating thousands of cruisers at a time.
Not An Uncommon Occurrence…
This is not the first time a drowning tragedy has been reported at a private island destination.
In 2023, a 26-year-old passenger drowned at MSC Cruises’ Ocean Cay Marine Reserve, showing that even carefully designed cruise line resorts can pose risks in aquatic settings.
Looking Ahead
While Celebration Key is Carnival’s newest and most ambitious private destination, these back-to-back tragedies highlight the importance of water safety for all passengers, regardless of age or experience. Investigations are ongoing, and Carnival has expressed its condolences to the families affected.
