200 Guests Fall Ill on 10-Day Voyage: What Happened Onboard?

A suspected gastroenteritis outbreak has affected approximately 200 passengers aboard the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral, which was on a 10-night voyage through the Norwegian Fjords.

The ship, which holds up to 1,350 passengers, was struck by illness as many guests reported symptoms of viral gastroenteritis, including watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and occasional fever.

How Fred Olsen is Responding to the Illness Outbreak Onboard

As the outbreak spread, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines quickly addressed the situation, keeping passengers informed with daily announcements about the rising number of illness cases. Although the staff worked diligently to contain the virus, passengers described the ship as becoming an “unpleasant environment.”

To prevent further contamination, onboard procedures were modified. There was no self-service during meal times, and activities such as dancing and other contact sports were canceled. Common areas were cleared of jigsaw puzzles, books, and playing cards to limit the possibility of further spread.

Kate Bunyan, the cruise line’s director of health services, stated that the ship’s medical team was on standby to assist passengers who felt unwell. The onboard nurse visited passengers who had fallen ill and kept track of their conditions through regular check-ins.

Passengers were also advised to stay in their cabins if they exhibited any symptoms of the illness, ensuring that they were well cared for.

Disappointment as Up Helly Aa Festival Visit Gets Canceled

In addition to the outbreak, the Balmoral’s planned visit to Lerwick for the highly anticipated Up Helly Aa festival, Europe’s largest fire festival, was also canceled due to stormy weather.

The cancellation was disappointing for many passengers who had been eagerly looking forward to the event. However, Fred Olsen emphasized that the safety of the guests and crew must always come first, and the weather conditions made it unsafe to proceed with the visit.

Inside the Efforts to Contain the Illness and Protect Passengers

In response to the outbreak, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines took immediate action to reduce the risk of further illness. Although the ship was still sailing to other destinations, the cruise line implemented strict measures to help limit transmission.

These included intensified cleaning protocols, along with onboard staff working tirelessly to disinfect public areas and ensure a safe environment for all guests. Passengers reported that while the ship’s atmosphere was not as carefree as expected, the staff’s efforts to maintain cleanliness were evident.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Ensures Guest Safety with Robust Health Protocols

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines reiterated its commitment to guest health and safety, citing its robust hygiene and health protocols. The cruise line ensured that every possible measure was in place to reduce the spread of illness. Additionally, Fred Olsen assured passengers that any guest who felt unwell would receive the necessary care and attention from the ship’s medical team.

“We always prioritize the safety and well-being of our guests and crew,” Bunyan added. “That’s why we took extra steps, including delaying embarkation and implementing more stringent cleaning practices.”

What Happened During the Delayed Return to Southampton?

Following the outbreak and cancellations, the Balmoral’s return to Southampton was delayed to allow for a more thorough deep cleaning of the ship and the terminal. Fred Olsen emphasized that this delay was necessary to ensure that health protocols were strictly followed and the ship was properly sanitized before its next sailing.

“Balmoral will be returning to Southampton tomorrow, where she will set sail a little later than planned to allow for a deep clean of the ship and cruise terminal,” Bunyan stated.

Fred Olsen’s Commitment to Health and Safety Amidst Challenging Conditions

Despite the challenges posed by the illness outbreak, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has reiterated that the health and safety of its guests will always be the top priority. The cruise line’s quick action, transparent communication, and dedication to cleanliness demonstrated its commitment to maintaining a safe cruise environment.

As the Balmoral continues its voyages, Fred Olsen will likely continue to enhance its health protocols to ensure that future cruises are as safe and enjoyable as possible, reassuring passengers that their well-being is always a key focus.
