Carnival Cruise Line Quietly Raises Service Fees—Here’s What You Need to Know

Carnival Cruise Line has quietly increased its standard service charge from 18% to 20%, affecting various onboard purchases like drink packages, specialty dining, and in-stateroom gifts.

While crew gratuities remain unchanged for now, this fee hike could signal further increases in costs for cruisers in the near future.

What’s Changed?

Previously, the 18% service charge applied to many onboard purchases, including drink packages, individual drinks, specialty dining, and in-room gifts. Now, with the service charge increased to 20%, customers can expect higher fees on their total bill.

For instance, if a family of four—two adults and two teens—purchases the Cheers! drink package for the adults, Bottomless Bubbles for the teens, and birthday stateroom decor, the charges will now reflect the increased fee.

Before (18% service charge):

  • Cheers! package: $979.30
  • Bottomless Bubbles: $97.30
  • Birthday decor: $52.75
  • Specialty dinner: $208
Total service charge at 18%: $240.71

After (20% service charge):

  • The total service charge increases to $267.47, a $26.76 difference for the same purchases.

While the increase may seem modest, for families or groups with several add-ons, it adds up quickly.

What’s Affected?

This increased service charge applies to a range of purchases:

  • Drink packages like Cheers!, Bottomless Bubbles, and the new Cheers! Zero Proof
  • Individual drinks purchased onboard
  • Specialty dining charges
  • In-room gifts like birthday decor, flowers, and toys

Though the service charge increase is the most visible change, additional price hikes for specialty dining, bottled water, internet, and other amenities could be on the horizon. Carnival has not raised gratuities since April 2023, but past trends suggest more increases are likely every 2-3 years.

The Bigger Picture

Inflation continues to affect the cruise industry, and Carnival is not alone in raising service charges. Other cruise lines, such as Royal Caribbean, have also raised gratuity rates, further highlighting the trend of price hikes across the industry.

For many cruise guests, these increases are part of a broader trend of rising costs and additional fees that sometimes feel like “nickel-and-diming.” At a time when loyalty programs are being scrutinized for prioritizing spending over the guest experience, these changes might not sit well with all cruisers.

Looking Ahead

While Carnival has not made an official announcement about future fee increases, it is likely that more hikes are in store as the cruise line adjusts to inflation and other economic factors.

Guests will need to stay alert for potential price changes, especially for popular add-ons like Faster to the Fun, Wi-Fi packages, and bottled water.

As always, it’s essential for travelers to review their onboard spending and be mindful of the cumulative impact of these added service charges on their budget.
