8.6 Million Cruisers Later… Port Canaveral Is Now the World’s Busiest Port

Port Canaveral has officially reclaimed its title as the world’s busiest cruise port, closing out fiscal year 2025 with a record-breaking 8.6 million passenger movements—a milestone that nudges it past PortMiami’s 8.5 million and marks the busiest year in its history.

The central Florida homeport saw explosive growth this year, posting a 13% increase over 2024’s numbers. By comparison, PortMiami grew just over 4% in the same period, solidifying Port Canaveral’s place at the top.

Port Canaveral CEO Capt. John Murray celebrated the achievement, noting that the port’s success reflects years of strategic planning and investment. “This distinction is a direct reflection of our ongoing commitment to be the best port possible,” he said, thanking port teams and cruise line partners for their confidence and support.

A Growing Homeport With Big-Ship Power

Port Canaveral is now home to 18 cruise ships across seven cruise lines, offering more than 1,000 sailings per year. The port regularly hosts some of the cruise industry’s newest and largest vessels, including:

  • Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas
  • Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Treasure

Both ships operate 7-night itineraries from the port, adding to the steady stream of short getaways, Caribbean sailings, Panama Canal voyages, and even transatlantic repositioning cruises that depart from the Space Coast.

$912 Million in Improvements to Meet Surging Demand

Rather than waiting for overcrowding, Port Canaveral has been aggressively expanding its infrastructure through its five-year Port Canaveral Advantage development plan—an investment worth $912 million.

Key upgrades include:

  • Expansion of two existing cruise terminals
  • Development of an all-new seventh cruise terminal campus
  • Additional parking facilities
  • New technology to streamline check-in and debarkation
  • Enhanced LNG refueling capabilities for environmentally advanced ships

These improvements are designed to keep pace with rapid growth and maintain the port’s reputation for smooth, efficient guest experiences.

Why Cruisers Love Port Canaveral

While Port Canaveral continues to expand, one thing remains constant—its popularity with both fly-in and drive-in travelers.

  • 75% of passengers drive to the port, thanks to its easy highway access and stress-free traffic flow.
  • The port sits just one hour from Orlando, with its massive network of hotels, rental cars, and theme parks.
  • Guests enjoy ample adjacent parking, clear signage, and modern terminals that simplify arrival and departure.

This convenience has made Port Canaveral a favorite for families, first-time cruisers, and repeat guests alike.

Cruise Options for Every Traveler

From Port Canaveral, cruisers can sail to nearly every corner of the Caribbean and Bahamas, including:

  • Jamaica
  • Cozumel
  • Grand Turk
  • San Juan
  • Dominican Republic
  • British & U.S. Virgin Islands
  • Private islands in the Bahamas

More ambitious itineraries—like ABC island routes and Panama Canal sailings—also originate from the port, giving travelers a wide spectrum of choices. Many cruisers take advantage of the port’s lineup for back-to-back or side-to-side vacations by mixing ships or cruise lines.

A Historic Year and More Growth on the Horizon

With up to six cruise ships able to dock daily and more terminal expansion underway, Port Canaveral is positioned to stay ahead of demand for years to come.

The port’s remarkable rise to No. 1 reflects not just passenger volume, but traveler preference—offering convenience, efficiency, modern facilities, and a strong mix of ships and itineraries.

With its newest improvements rolling out and more mega-ships continuing to homeport there, Port Canaveral’s reign as the world’s busiest cruise port appears just beginning.
