Cruise Guest’s Pole Dance Fail Goes Viral After Dramatic Fall on Celebrity Ship
A cruise guest recently gave fellow travelers—and the internet—a moment to remember after a pole dancing stunt on board a Celebrity Cruises ship ended in a dramatic fall. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the incident has since gone viral.
Stunt Gone Wrong at Sea

The guest, 28-year-old circus performer Marylee Whitlock, was sailing on a Celebrity Cruises vessel when she tried an impromptu routine on an X-Pole set up for the ship’s “Shine the Night” deck party. This high-energy celebration debuted on Celebrity Ascent in late 2023 and is now featured across several of the cruise line’s Edge-class ships, with plans to expand further in the fleet.
Whitlock, an experienced performer, began her routine with a confident shoulder mount. But the humid weather and sweat made the pole far slicker than expected. As she inverted, her hips tipped over her head and she lost her grip—sending her crashing to the deck below.
Viral Reactions Online
The fall, captured on video, quickly spread on social media, racking up more than 213,000 views within days. Comments ranged from shock to humor. One viewer admitted, “I thought her head went through the floor,” while another joked they would have “gone straight to my room and stayed there.”
Others noted the casual reactions of nearby guests, with one amused commenter pointing out, “The way those two men looked at her and then carried on with their conversation had me.”
Why She Walked Away Unharmed
Despite the dramatic tumble, Whitlock escaped uninjured. As a trained circus professional, she was able to tuck her head and roll properly during the fall—skills that likely prevented a serious accident.
“Pole dancing is inherently dangerous, and I’ve been trained to deal with such situations,” she explained. “No one should attempt it without professional assistance.”
Whitlock has since leaned into the humor of the incident, reposting the clip with different song mash-ups—including Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl”—and laughing along with her growing audience.
Permission and Safety Reminders
Whitlock clarified that while she was not a contracted performer for Celebrity Cruises, she did seek and receive permission to use the pole before attempting her stunt.
Celebrity Cruises encourages guests to enjoy its nightlife offerings, but for the average cruiser, the safest choice is to keep the fun on the dance floor. The “Shine the Night” party still offers plenty of entertainment, including live music, electrified dance floors, and glittering outfits, without the risks of acrobatics.
