MSC Cruises Announces $450 Million Cruise Pier and Beach Club Project in Freeport
MSC Cruises is moving forward with a major $450 million investment in Freeport, Grand Bahama, marking one of the largest cruise-related developments the island has seen in years. The project was confirmed by Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis, who said the agreement has been formally signed and advanced as part of a broader effort to revive Grand Bahama’s economy.
The investment will be split between a new, purpose-built cruise complex at Billy Cay and upgrades to the existing Freeport Harbour area, dramatically changing how cruise passengers experience the port.
New Cruise Pier and Terminal at Billy Cay
The majority of the funding, approximately $400 million, will be used to develop a brand-new cruise ship pier complex at Billy Cay. Instead of docking in the more industrial sections of Freeport Harbour, ships will call at a dedicated, modern cruise terminal designed specifically for passenger traffic.
The new pier is being built to accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships and will feature a central welcome plaza and visitor center. Plans for the site include shopping areas, food and beverage venues, entertainment spaces, transportation staging, and other supporting infrastructure aimed at creating a smooth transition from ship to shore.
Officials have emphasized that the goal is to make Freeport a destination guests look forward to visiting, rather than a port where passengers choose to stay onboard.
Upgrades to Freeport Harbour
In addition to the new terminal, $50 million will be invested in improvements to the existing Freeport Harbour area. These upgrades are expected to focus on enhancing the guest experience while supporting local commerce.
Planned improvements include refurbishments to the Retail Village and the construction of a new beach club, offering cruisers additional leisure options while encouraging spending in the local economy.
A Multi-User Cruise Facility
Prime Minister Davis described the development as a “multi-user facility,” meaning it will not be exclusive to MSC Cruises. The port is designed to support operational flexibility and welcome ships from multiple cruise lines.
This approach is intended to increase cruise traffic, boost passenger volumes, and generate wider economic benefits across transportation, hospitality, culture, and small businesses on Grand Bahama. The project also positions Freeport to compete more directly with other major cruise developments in the region, including Carnival’s nearby Celebration Key.
Part of a Broader Bahamas Strategy
The Freeport investment comes shortly after MSC Cruises announced major enhancements to its private island destination, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. By late 2027, Ocean Cay is set to receive an extended pier capable of docking two ships simultaneously, along with new dining venues and expanded beach areas.
Additional plans for Ocean Cay include a second island retreat reserved for luxury guests, new family attractions, adults-only relaxation zones, and several new food and beverage outlets.
Together, the Freeport cruise complex and Ocean Cay upgrades signal a significant expansion of MSC Cruises’ long-term commitment to The Bahamas, with the cruise line doubling down on both private destinations and public ports of call across the region.
