Cruise Passenger Sues Celebrity After Tripping Over Speaker on Dance Floor
A cruise vacation took a painful turn for one passenger after what she claims was a preventable accident onboard the Celebrity Reflection — and now, it’s turned into a federal lawsuit.
Guest Claims Speaker Created Dangerous Hazard

According to court filings, Florida resident Jeannette Beres is suing Celebrity Cruises after she tripped over a speaker placed on a dance floor in the ship’s main atrium on Deck 3.
The incident reportedly happened during a lively onboard event, where music and dancing were taking place in the ship’s grand foyer — a popular gathering spot for live performances and themed parties.
Beres claims that a large speaker or amplifier had been placed directly in an area where passengers were expected to walk and dance. While moving across the floor toward a nearby dining area, she says she did not see the equipment and fell.
Her legal team argues that the placement of the speaker created an “unreasonable tripping hazard,” especially given the crowded environment, dim lighting, and distractions from the ongoing entertainment.
Injuries Described as Serious and Ongoing
As a result of the fall, Beres reportedly suffered a fractured foot along with other injuries to her body and extremities.
The lawsuit states that the injuries have led to ongoing pain, emotional distress, and a reduced quality of life. She is seeking compensation for medical expenses, as well as damages tied to pain, suffering, and long-term impacts.
Her legal team also claims the injuries may be permanent and could require continued medical care.
Multiple Negligence Claims Filed
The complaint includes several allegations of negligence against Celebrity Cruises, including:
- Failure to maintain a safe environment
- Failure to properly inspect the area
- Failure to warn passengers of the hazard
According to the filing, no signage, barriers, or verbal warnings were provided to alert guests about the speaker’s placement.
The lawsuit further argues that the cruise line should have either removed the equipment entirely or restricted access to the area to prevent accidents.
Cruise Line Allegedly Knew of Similar Risks
One of the more notable arguments in the case is that Celebrity Cruises may have already been aware of similar risks.
The lawsuit references prior trip-and-fall incidents across both Celebrity ships and those operated by its parent company, Royal Caribbean Group.
Examples cited include passengers tripping over:
- Life jacket bags
- Electrical cords
- Lounge chairs left in walkways
By pointing to these past incidents, the plaintiff’s legal team is attempting to show that the cruise line had prior knowledge of the dangers associated with misplaced objects in high-traffic areas.
No Public Response Yet From Celebrity Cruises
As of now, Celebrity Cruises has not publicly commented on the lawsuit.
Like most cases of this nature, liability will ultimately depend on whether the cruise line failed to meet its duty of care — or whether the incident falls under assumed risk, which can apply in environments like crowded dance floors on moving ships.
Cruise lines typically follow strict safety standards, including guidelines under the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which aim to reduce slip and trip hazards onboard.
Fall-Related Lawsuits Remain Common in Cruising
This case is far from isolated.
Trip-and-fall lawsuits are among the most common types of claims filed against cruise lines. In recent weeks alone, multiple lawsuits have been filed against major operators, including cases involving similar accidents onboard ships from Royal Caribbean and other brands.
Earlier this year, a passenger also filed a lawsuit against Princess Cruises after reportedly slipping on debris in a dining area.
What Happens Next
Beres has requested a jury trial to determine damages, and the case will now move through the federal court system in South Florida.
For now, the outcome remains uncertain — but the lawsuit highlights an ongoing issue in the cruise industry: balancing high-energy entertainment spaces with passenger safety.
And for guests, it’s a reminder that even in the middle of a dance party at sea, unexpected hazards can quickly turn a vacation into something very different.
