Explore Alaska’s Newest Gem: The Port of Klawock Welcomes World Travelers
Alaska, a premier destination for cruise enthusiasts, has expanded its offerings with the recent opening of the Port of Klawock.
Nestled on the central western shore of Prince of Wales Island, this new port of call has opened its docks with the arrival of the luxury cruise ship, Seabourn Odyssey, on May 6, 2024.
Spanning 16 acres, the Port of Klawock is not only a deepwater port capable of accommodating large vessels but also reflects a design inspired by the successful Icy Strait Point.
The port’s strategic location features two scenic fjord entrances, making it a versatile stop for northbound or southbound cruise routes.
The surrounding community, with fewer than 800 residents, offers an authentic Alaskan experience. Visitors can engage in sport fishing, totem carving, and wildlife watching, or explore the extensive Totem Parks—one of the largest in Alaska.
Additionally, Klawock is home to Alaska’s oldest hatchery and the first salmon cannery, offering a glimpse into the area’s historical and ongoing economic activities.
Further enriching the visitor experience, the port includes a welcome center, historical exhibits, retail spaces for local artisans, and a café.
These facilities, coupled with walking trails and a bus stop for island tours, aim to boost the economic revival of Klawock, providing both new opportunities for residents and a fresh attraction for visitors.
The port was developed as a joint venture between Alaska Native corporations Doyon, Limited, and Huna Totem Corporation, ensuring that the development benefits from local insights and contributes to the community’s future.
Looking ahead, the port anticipates welcoming additional luxury liners like Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Explorer and Oceania Cruises’ Oceania Regatta in 2024, with more scheduled visits in 2025.
This expansion in cruise itineraries underscores the growing appeal of Klawock as a unique destination for those familiar with Alaskan voyages and newcomers alike.
As the cruise industry continues to plan ahead, the Port of Klawock stands out as a promising new destination that combines the untouched beauty of Alaska with the comforts and excitement of luxury cruising.
