Carnival Firenze Passenger Alleges Bed Bug Infestation During Holiday Sailing

A traveler has alleged bed bugs on Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Firenze during the ship’s December 21–27, 2025 sailing, according to a detailed post shared on the r/Cruise subreddit earlier this week.

Reddit user u/CrewsTim, who posted the report “for awareness,” said a live adult bed bug was discovered inside stateroom 8271 on December 25, followed by a second deceased bug during a subsequent inspection. The original post included a photo of what appeared to be a small reddish-brown bug resting on a light-colored sheet.

“I am posting this purely for passenger awareness,” the user wrote. “If you’re sailing soon, don’t forget to inspect your cabin and luggage on arrival and wash clothes on high heat afterward.”

Passengers Allege Laundry Response Changed Mid-Cruise

According to the post, Guest Services initially reassured the cabin occupants that their clothing would be washed and heat-treated to mitigate possible infestation risks. However, the promised service was later reversed.

“We were informed laundering wouldn’t be provided and that they will only be steamed,” the passenger wrote, adding that belongings were returned “unwashed, damp, and with a mildew odor.”

The traveler said they ultimately handled heat treatment at home, placing all items in plastic bags and washing them after returning.

Multiple Complications Reported: Room Reassignments & Medical Visit

The situation reportedly escalated into an overnight room reassignment process. The family had booked two adjoining balcony cabins and requested equal accommodations following treatment of stateroom 8271.

“There was extended back-and-forth,” the OP explained. “Around 3:00 A.M. we were ultimately provided access to both replacement rooms and finally able to sleep.”

The post also mentioned a medical visit for suspected bed bug bites that was charged to the guests.

Reactions From the Cruise Community

The thread quickly gained traction with more than 600 upvotes and hundreds of comments, ranging from concern to frustration.

Several commenters highlighted that bed bugs are not limited to budget or older ships:

“Ppl don’t realize that bedbugs DO NOT DISCRIMINATE,” wrote u/GrouchyDefinition463, noting they’ve seen issues even in “very high end hotels.”

Another commenter shared a similar experience unrelated to cruising, writing:

“I spent months backpacking and never experienced bedbugs … The pricey boutique hotel is where I woke up with bites,” said u/rapscallionrodent.

Other users criticized Carnival’s response rather than the incident itself. As u/CuriosTiger commented:

“Bed bugs happen. Poor customer service by Carnival to go back on their word … promising that and then reneging is downright petty.”

Another commenter, u/annul, argued that while bed bugs onboard may be statistically rare, “the complete lack of any proper resolution by [Guest Services] is … unfortunately quite statistically common.”

Concern From Upcoming Guests

Some future cruisers voiced anxiety:

“I go in about 2 weeks 😭 are you kidding me!!!!” wrote u/WillThrowMud.

Others attempted humor to lighten the mood, including u/SufficientSquirrel27, who added:

“Make sure you don’t bring a bunch of new pets home with you.”

OP Clarifies: Issue Was “Terrible but Uncommon”

Despite frustration, the reporting passenger emphasized that the goal was not to alarm cruisers.

“Just a reminder that while this was a terrible experience, it is still statistically uncommon,” wrote u/CrewsTim, who encouraged routine cabin inspections and luggage precautions for travelers.

Were Later Guests Warned?

The OP later responded that another traveler claimed to have been assigned the same cabin only days later.

“Someone reached out … letting me know they were placed in cabin 8271 on 12/27 without warning,” they wrote, though noting the cabin appeared heavily treated.

Carnival Cruise Line Has Not Publicly Commented

Carnival Cruise Line has not issued a public statement regarding the Reddit claims as of publication. Bed bugs are generally considered an occasional risk at hotels, rental properties, and transportation hubs due to guest turnover rather than facility cleanliness. Most major cruise lines follow established pest control protocols when infestations are confirmed.

What Cruisers Should Know

While cases like this require attention, reports remain rare across the industry. Experts typically recommend:

✔ Inspecting bedding, seams, and headboards upon arrival
✔ Keeping luggage elevated or stored in bathrooms initially
✔ Heat-drying clothing immediately after travel
✔ Watching for small black specks, reddish stains, or live insects

Bottom Line

Isolated or not, the Reddit report adds to a growing conversation around how cruise lines — and Carnival in particular — respond when bed bugs are discovered at sea. Just months ago, Carnival was hit with a federal lawsuit alleging an untreated bedbug infestation aboard Carnival Horizon during a February 2025 sailing, with plaintiffs claiming severe bites and a lack of cabin relocation during their trip.

While that case remains unresolved, it has drawn attention to how cruise operators balance pest control, guest communication, and post-incident support.

For most travelers, bedbugs are still an uncommon and unlucky encounter. But the latest Reddit account highlights the role of customer service and transparency when they do happen.

As cruising continues to surge in popularity, how lines address these rare incidents may matter almost as much as how often they occur — both for traveler confidence and for avoiding the kind of complaints that can escalate from social media threads to the courtroom.
