Caught on Camera: Cruise Passenger’s Mad Dash After the Wrong Ship

In a heart-stopping yet humorous turn of events, a cruise passenger in Alaska was seen sprinting along the Sitka pier on September 9, 2024, trying to catch what he believed to be his departing ship.

As Princess Cruises’ Crown Princess sailed away, the passenger, convinced he had missed his vessel, made a frantic dash that was caught on camera by fellow travelers.

The Crown Princess, which carries up to 3,080 passengers, was on its way to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, as part of an 11-night roundtrip voyage from San Francisco.

As the ship pulled away, onlookers aboard another cruise ship captured the scene, and a video posted by passenger Jordan Flom quickly went viral.

Flom’s video showed the runner waving desperately as the Crown Princess drifted from the dock. “Oh no, he’s missed his ship!” Flom exclaimed. However, in a comedic twist, the man’s actual ship, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Bliss, was still docked nearby.

A bystander pointed him in the right direction, revealing the man’s mistake to the crowd, which shared a laugh with him as he caught his breath.

The passenger, one of up to 4,004 guests aboard the Norwegian Bliss, was able to reboard his ship, continuing his 7-night Alaskan cruise. The ship, which is significantly larger than the Crown Princess, has a gross tonnage of 168,028 and was on a roundtrip journey from Seattle, set to visit Juneau, Tracy Arm, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, and Victoria, British Columbia.

The video of the mix-up sparked online discussions about the nightmare of missing a cruise ship. While this story ended with a laugh, missing a ship can lead to expensive and stressful consequences.

Cruise lines operate on tight schedules, and passengers who fail to board on time are responsible for arranging their own transportation to catch up with the ship, often at their own expense.

Cruise experts recommend always double-checking the ship’s time, as it may differ from the local port time, and allowing extra time when returning from independent excursions to avoid any last-minute sprints to the pier.
