Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day Mexico Faces Backlash as Petition Nears 300,000 Signatures

Royal Caribbean’s plans for its newest private destination, Perfect Day Mexico, are facing mounting backlash from locals.

A petition calling for the cruise line to cancel the development has now attracted more than 278,000 signatures, highlighting growing concerns about the project’s potential impact on the Costa Maya region.

A New Perfect Day Destination

Perfect Day Mexico is scheduled to open in 2027 near Mahahual, a small fishing town in Costa Maya. The 200-acre project is designed to complement Royal Caribbean’s highly popular Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. Plans include 10 pools, an adults-only hideaway, a beach club, more than 30 waterslides, and headline attractions like the world’s longest lazy river and a cliff-diving platform.

While many cruise guests are excited about the expansion, residents argue the project could overwhelm the community and threaten fragile ecosystems.

Why Locals Are Concerned

Opponents of the development say the resort could bring up to 20,000 tourists per day, straining the town’s limited infrastructure and resources. Among their concerns:

  • Environmental impact: increased plastic waste, chemical runoff, and damage to surrounding ecosystems.
  • Water usage: excessive freshwater demand in an area already experiencing shortages.
  • Cultural erosion: fears that rapid tourism growth could dilute the community’s traditional fishing culture.

Campaign organizers stress they are not opposed to tourism itself, but are demanding a transparent, independent environmental review before construction continues.

Royal Caribbean’s Response

Royal Caribbean has acknowledged the criticism, stating that an Environmental Impact Statement is underway. The cruise line insists the project is being built with sustainability in mind, pointing to initiatives such as:

  • Mangrove preservation and restoration of natural waterflows.
  • Turtle nesting ground protection and coastal clean-up projects.
  • Wastewater treatment infrastructure and clean energy integration.

According to the company, Perfect Day Mexico will provide economic opportunities while protecting the environment. Royal Caribbean also says it plans to expand community engagement through meetings and dialogue with local residents.

The Uncertain Future of Perfect Day Mexico

With the petition rapidly gaining signatures, the future of Perfect Day Mexico remains unclear. While Royal Caribbean continues to push ahead with construction and promises more communication with the community, local opposition is unlikely to fade without significant assurances.

For now, the project remains on track for its 2027 debut—but the growing public pressure suggests the cruise giant may need to take stronger steps to win over residents who fear the cost of development could outweigh the benefits.
