Woman Busted for Using $37K GoFundMe Donations on Carnival Cruise

Authorities in Pennsylvania say a woman raised tens of thousands of dollars for her injured cousin—then pocketed nearly all of it for her own expenses, including a cruise vacation.

Vanessa Lewis, 29, of the Pittsburgh area, launched a GoFundMe in August 2024 after her cousin was seriously hurt in a motorcycle crash. The campaign brought in more than $40,000 in donations, meant to support his recovery. But police allege Lewis instead diverted over $37,000 for personal use.

Carnival Cruise Expense Raises Red Flags

Among the most notable charges investigators uncovered was a $6,200 payment linked to a Carnival Cruise Line voyage from Miami. While reports identified the ship as Carnival Parade, officials suggest it may have been Carnival Paradise—which sailed from Tampa in 2024—or another vessel homeported in Miami, such as Carnival Horizon, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Magic, Carnival Conquest, or Carnival Celebration.

Police also found that more than $21,000 had been wired to another account, draining the fundraiser to just over $3,000 by March 2025.

The investigation began after the injured man’s father spotted Lewis posting cruise photos on social media, prompting him to check the fundraiser balance and alert authorities.

Facing Felony Charges

Lewis is now charged with theft by deception and receiving stolen property, both felonies of the third degree in Pennsylvania. She has been released on $10,000 bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for September 16, 2025.

If convicted, she faces up to seven years in prison and fines of up to $15,000 for each offense.

A Disturbing Trend: Cruises Paid With Stolen Funds

Though shocking, this case isn’t isolated. In Florida, a church financial secretary was accused of embezzling over $500,000, with some of the money allegedly spent on cruises.

In Virginia, a private school business manager admitted to misusing nearly $250,000—again, with a cruise among her personal charges. And just this past June, a Wyoming church official was arrested before boarding a Norwegian Cruise Line Alaska voyage, accused of embezzling thousands from her congregation.

For prosecutors and victims, these cases highlight how luxury vacations—especially cruises—are increasingly showing up in investigations of financial misconduct.
