Jazz Cruise Ends in Tragedy After Performer Found Dead Aboard Celebrity Ship

A seven-night jazz-themed cruise meant to celebrate music and artistry ended in tragedy after one of its featured performers was found dead aboard Celebrity Summit.

Renowned jazz musician Ken Peplowski, 66, passed away during The Jazz Cruise 2026, a charter sailing that departed from Port Everglades on January 27 and returned to Florida on February 3. The news was confirmed by organizers of the cruise on the final day of the voyage, sending shockwaves through both passengers onboard and the wider jazz community.

Discovered After Missing Performance

Peplowski’s death came to light after he failed to appear for a scheduled afternoon performance on Sunday. His absence was immediately considered unusual, as he was known among fellow musicians as a consummate professional who rarely missed an engagement.

After a search of the ship, Peplowski was found deceased in his stateroom. The official cause of death has not yet been released. Guests onboard reported that the discovery occurred late in the sailing, just as the ship was preparing to return to Florida.

Health History Shared by Guests

While authorities have not confirmed the cause of death, passengers familiar with Peplowski shared that he had previously been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2021, a rare cancer affecting plasma cells in the blood. Several guests stated that he had been in remission and appeared to be doing well during the cruise.

One passenger who spoke with Peplowski earlier in the week said he seemed upbeat and healthy, adding to the shock felt by those who had seen him perform just hours before his death.

A Beloved Figure in Jazz

Peplowski was one of more than 100 musicians featured during The Jazz Cruise, an annual event that bills itself as a haven for straight-ahead jazz lovers. The sailing included more than 200 hours of live performances showcasing a wide range of instruments and styles, from traditional swing to more modern jazz interpretations.

Throughout his career, Peplowski released more than 50 albums and was widely respected not only for his technical skill on clarinet and saxophone, but also for his generosity, mentorship, and deep respect for fellow musicians.

Guests and fans shared messages of grief online, describing him as kind, warm, and deeply committed to his craft. Many expressed heartbreak over losing an artist who continued performing at a high level despite health challenges.

Cruise Itinerary Continues as Planned

Despite the tragic circumstances, Celebrity Summit was not delayed. The ship returned to Port Everglades on schedule and has already departed on her next sailing. The vessel remains homeported in Fort Lauderdale for Caribbean and Bahamas cruises through mid-April before repositioning to the West Coast for the Alaska cruise season.

Organizers of The Jazz Cruise expressed condolences to Peplowski’s family, friends, and fellow musicians, noting his long-standing role in the event and the broader international jazz community. His absence will be deeply felt on future sailings, where he had become a familiar and cherished presence.

The loss has cast a somber shadow over what is typically one of the most celebrated specialty cruises at sea, reminding both guests and performers of the close-knit community formed aboard these music-focused voyages.
